About This Experience
An ice cave is a meltwater channel that ran through a glacier in summer and froze solid in winter. You go down into it, and what you are standing in is the inside of the glacier: blue banded walls, frozen waterfalls, ceilings that read like geological cross-sections. Svalbard has them because the glaciers here are cold-based and stable enough to enter safely between roughly November and April.
This tour reaches one by snowmobile, which is the difference between a half-day and a full one. You ride your own machine — a briefing, a suit and helmet, and then the frozen valley floor out of Longyearbyen between mountain ridges. The riding is the reason people book it twice.
The group is capped at four per guide, which is small for Svalbard and matters inside a cave, where a queue of twenty destroys the thing you came to see. Your guide covers glacier and cave geology at the site, and helps with photographs — ice caves are hard to shoot and the results are worth the trouble.
One hard requirement: you must bring a valid driving licence to ride. The operator is unambiguous that without it you cannot drive and there is no refund. If nobody in your party drives, ask about the private version where you ride as a passenger.

This private tour is very informative / the guides gave a lot of information. The great thank is that you go in the cave private and not with 20 people as with the Snow Cat for example. Snow Cat is cheaper at about 1395 NOK but the adventure is better private. We went in the cave in the morning at 8am where no people were there. Very friendly guides!
