About This Experience

This is the orientation tour of Longyearbyen, and at two hours it is the one that fits a cruise call, a layover, or the afternoon you land. It is done by car, which matters more here than it sounds: outside the town's few kilometres of road you cannot legally walk without a rifle and someone who knows how to use it, so a vehicle is how you actually reach the viewpoints.

The route covers the town — the old mining infrastructure, the cableway pylons still standing on the hillsides, the residential streets — then heads out into Adventdalen, the broad valley behind Longyearbyen. That is where the Svalbard Global Seed Vault is, and where you stand at its entrance. The Vault has never been open to the public; the concrete wedge in the mountainside is as close as anyone without an appointment gets, and the guide's account of what is inside and why it is here is the substance of the stop.

Adventdalen is also the most reliable place near town for Svalbard reindeer — stocky, short-legged, and almost indifferent to people. Arctic foxes and ptarmigan turn up too. Nothing is guaranteed, but the valley is open and the sightlines are long.

Photo stops are built into the route and the pace is deliberately unhurried. If you have not brought a camera the guide will shoot for you, and you can buy the files at the end.

Good to Know & Caveats

• The Seed Vault interior is closed to the public — this tour goes to the entrance, which is as close as visitors can get
• Almost all of the tour is from the car with short stops, so it suits limited mobility better than most Svalbard tours
• Wildlife sightings in Adventdalen are common but never guaranteed
• At two hours it is the easiest Svalbard day tour to fit around a flight or a ship's call
